The 21st Century Reforms (Re)Shaping the Education Policy of Inclusive and Special Education in Finland

2021

In recent decades, an essential global aim of the reforms of special education has been the promotion of inclusive education. This article discusses the implementation of reforms with a focus on tiered support systems in the context of Finnish comprehensive school education. Based on earlier literature, legislation, and administrative documents, we provide a background for Finnish education policy and special education reforms. The focus of this article is on the description of parallel reforms targeting the re-structuring of the systems around support for students and funding of education in the 2010s. We discuss the processes leading to these reforms and the reforms themselves. In additio…

Family Relationships, Dialogue, and Philosophy for Children:

2021

The paper deals with the importance of words and dialogue in family education. In the first part, some evidence of an action research is presented – shaped in a hermeneutic phenomenological framework and thanks to the Philosophy for Children method and materials. Then some key words are pointed out, meant as formative goals for parents’ educational support, so as to highlight the importance of dialogue among generations and, mainly, of the ethical responsibility of parents in education.

Development of math anxiety and its longitudinal relationships with arithmetic achievement among primary school children

2019

Abstract The aim of this study is to examine the development of two separable aspects of math anxiety, anxiety about math-related situations and anxiety about failure in math, and their cross-lagged relationship with arithmetic achievement. The mean level of anxiety about math-related situations decreased among second, third, and fourth graders, and the level of anxiety about failure in math declined among third, fourth, and fifth graders. The rank-order of individuals was more stable in arithmetic achievement than in either aspect of math anxiety. Arithmetic achievement predicted later anxiety about failure in math, but neither aspect of math anxiety predicted later achievement. The result…

Corresponsabilità e cura educativa dei genitori nello “zero-sei”: un’esperienza di ricerca e formazione attraversata dalla pandemia

2022

This paper focuses on early childhood educators as possible facilitators of educational co-responsibility with families and, therefore, of inclusive educating communities, in line with the PNRR. A research-training with educators from Palermo, which began before the pandemic and was then reformulated, is presented. For this research, a questionnaire was administered in 2019 to investigate three areas from which, according to the literature, obstacles to an effective educational alliance often arise: educators’ understanding of current family education, what educators think parents to be and ideas of co-responsibility. In 2022, an online questionnaire similar to the first was administered, a…

School district administrators' perspectives on special education policy and practice in Norway and Sweden

2012

The purpose of this study was to examine special education policy and practice from the perspective of school district administrators in Norway and Sweden. Administrators from 266 Norwegian and 262 Swedish municipalities completed a survey concerning: (a) reasons children need special education, (b) common and desired organizational solutions, and (c) the influence of policy on practice. Despite a number of clear differences, findings suggest that Swedish and Norwegian administrators share similar attitudes regarding the provision of special education support. It appears that in both countries inclusive practices are seen as the ideal, yet, Norwegian administrators appear to have a stronger…

Care management in a French cohort with Down syndrome from the AnDDI-Rares/CNSA study.

2021

Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder. In individuals with DS, a multidisciplinary approach to care is required to prevent multiple medical complications. The aim of this study was to describe the rehabilitation, medical care, and educational and social support provided to school-aged French DS patients with varying neuropsychological profiles. A mixed study was conducted. Quantitative data were obtained from a French multicentre study that included patients aged 4-20 years with diverse genetic syndromes. Qualitative data were collected by semi-structured face-to-face interviews and focus groups. Ninety-five DS subjects with a mean age of 10.9 years were included. Sixt…

Early numeracy in low‐performing young children

2009

The aim of this study was to explore the early numeracy of low‐performing young children. The mean age of the children was six years and four months. The 511 participants belonged to three groups: multi‐language children, children with special educational needs and children with average performance. The results showed that there were significant group differences in early numeracy: the children in the reference group had better relational and counting skills than those with a multi‐language background and those with special educational needs. Some differences were found in counting skills between the children with multi‐language background and those with special educational needs. Finally, …

Les compétences sociales et la réussite scolaire des élèves de cycle III. L'effet de l'accompagnement scolaire

2016

Differences of achievement in school, traditionally studied by Education researchers, can be analyzed in the light of skills and especially social skills. This scientific field is under construction but social skills still become a "must" for actors of the school system and for Educational Sciences. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this thesis proposes to question the link between social skills and academic achievement of students, taking into account factors related to their various socialization frameworks (family, school, extra-curricular). A reliable analytic tool of social skills (in a sample of 855 students from 7 to 12 years) allows to understand first of all, that inter and int…
